Go behind the scenes for an up-close experience with one of Maymont’s porcupines, Barb or Sandy. In a new educational space located by the habitat, a Maymont staff member will provide an overview of porcupine behaviors, natural history and unique adaptations to our environment.
Observe Barb or Sandy up close, from a safe distance, as she enjoys an enrichment treat in her natural habitat along the Virginia Wildlife Trail. Each 30-minute program includes a Q&A session and a photo op. (Please note: No flash photography or direct contact with the animal is allowed.)
This program is offered Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00pm through August, and Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00pm from September 5 through November 29, excluding select event weekends. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance of the program start time.
Check in at the Maymont Farm at 2:45pm. Detailed meeting instructions will be sent in your confirmation email. A guide will lead the group to the porcupine habitat, about a quarter mile on foot.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes and sun or rain protection and bring a water bottle. The program will take place rain or shine but may be canceled for severe weather. Capacity is limited to 8 people. Children must be at least 4 years of age and accompanied by a ticketed parent or guardian.
The porcupine education area is not fully wheelchair accessible due to a small set of stairs. Guests seeking wheelchair-accessible animal encounters may enjoy Breakfast with the Bears or Bobcat Up Close.
Please note: You must complete a Liability Waiver form during registration for each participant in your party.
