TBEX Complementary Maymont Mansion Tour
Mansion Tours
Enjoy a guided tour of Maymont Mansion, an 1893 Gilded Age home given to the city of Richmond in 1925 along with the surrounding 100-acre estate by James and Sallie May Dooley to be used as a public park and museum. The Mansion reopened in March 2026 after a two-year preservation project that replaced the roof with red slate to match the original material and updated the climate control system, among other conservation projects. Its first and second floors are lavishly furnished with decorative objects and furniture from both Maymont and the Dooleys’ summer home, Swannanoa. The mansion is a well-preserved document of both the opulence of the Gilded Age and the complicated Jim Crow era.
Maymont Mansion tours begin at the front door of the mansion. The 1700 Hampton Street Gate entrance is the closest entrance to the Maymont Mansion and can be found on the map of the Maymont grounds here: Map & Directions | Maymont
Accessibility: As a historic home, the mansion is not accessible by wheelchair. There are stairs to enter, and a staircase to the second floor. The belowstairs level, with a curated exhibition on the working life of domestic staff during the Jim Crow era is accessible by wheelchair. There are no public restrooms in the mansion, but restrooms are available in nearby buildings.
